Document Veteran Joins Alfresco to Cross the Chasm with Open Source

LONDON November 17, 2005 Alfresco Software, Inc., the first provider of an open source enterprise content management solution, today announced that Dr. Ian Howells has joined the team as chief marketing officer. Howells joined the company in September, prior to the release of the full production version of its software. He has unparalleled experience in strategic marketing of Enterprise Content Management Solutions having run European Marketing for Documentum and been Global VP of Marketing for SeeBeyond.

“Documentum was recognized as an outstanding marketing company and Ian drove much of that strategy and implementation,” said Newton. “He brings a strong technical background, which is quite unique for a marketing executive and will help us better tailor our communications to customers, developers and the community. His startup, technical and marketing experience make him an ideal spokesman for the open source community.”

Howells said: “The movement toward open source has introduced a fundamental shift in how companies think about and use operating systems, databases, middleware and now enterprise applications. Alfresco has the software, management team and partners to lead the way toward open source enterprise content management. I look forward to helping the company get the word out to customers and partners about the availability of a full-featured, standards-based, open source alternative to proprietary systems.”

Howells spent more than 7 years at Documentum, first as European marketing director and later as worldwide director of knowledge applications. In that time Documentum grew from a startup to a market leader. Prior to joining Alfresco, Howells was worldwide marketing vice president at integration solutions provider SeeBeyond, which was acquired by Sun Microsystems in August 2005. While at SeeBeyond, Howells helped increase global revenue in 2004 from $137 million to $163 million.

Howells earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wales (Cardiff) in computing in 1988. He also completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wales, concentrating in computing and statistical analysis. Howells has written numerous academic papers for the computing industry and is author of the books Prolog and Database Implementation and New Directions Pharmaceutical Standards.
