Leading Open Source Industry Strategist Joins Enterprise Content Management Innovator to Head North American Outreach
LONDON (BUSINESS WIRE) Dec. 13, 2005 Alfresco Software, Inc., the first provider of an open source enterprise content management solution, today announced the appointment of Matt Asay as the company's first vice president of business development. Asay comes to Alfresco from Novell, where he co-founded its Linux Business Office, and joins a team of Documentum and Business Objects veterans. Based in San Francisco, Asay is responsible for working with Alfresco's expanding roster of North American business partners and enterprise customers.
Asay has been involved with open source since 1998 and was an architect of Novell's shift to open source. In 2003 he founded the Open Source Business Conference, the industry's premier strategy event, and will continue with OSBC as program director and board member. He has also served as an entrepreneur in residence for Thomas Weisel Venture Partners, focusing on open source investment opportunities. Prior to Novell, Asay was general manager at Lineo, an embedded Linux software company.
Asay earned his J.D. at Stanford Law School. He spent two of his three years in the program studying software licensing and innovation under Professor Lawrence Lessig. He also holds master's and bachelor's degrees from the University of Kent (Canterbury, U.K.) and Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah), respectively.
“Alfresco brings a combination of quality product and management that's rarely seen in a new company,” said Asay. “They've developed modular, rock-solid software that competes head-to-head with any enterprise content management solution, closed or open, and the company's leadership brings unparalleled experience in content management. These factors, together with a huge market opportunity as open source applications come into their own, have sparked substantial interest in Alfresco. My ongoing involvement with the open source community and industry at large are factors I believe will help guide the company's development and presence in North America.”
John Powell, President and CEO of Alfresco Software, said: “Since the initial release of code earlier this year and the launch of the full production version in October, downloads of Alfresco have exceeded our expectations. Enterprises are looking for a content management alternative that allows them to capture and reuse information in a manner that doesn't encumber employees, while at the same time putting in place a rigorous information tracking system that supports regulatory compliance. Matt comes on board at a time when we're experiencing very strong demand for the product and related services. He brings a wealth of experience working with open source and proprietary software that will be invaluable as Alfresco quickly scales to support customers and partners.”
Alfresco uses best-of-breed open source technologies to produce modular, feature-rich software that is as easy to use as a file system, allowing companies to benefit from content management without requiring employees to alter the way they work. It supports customers through Alfresco Networks, an umbrella of services and tools tailored to meet the needs of open source developers as well as the most demanding enterprise customers.
